Where HP Inc. does well

  • Instant Ink monthly plans genuinely have no contracts, no penalties, and no cancellation fees, and you can cancel online or by phone at 1-855-785-2777.
  • HP honors the Global Privacy Control browser signal to opt out of sale/sharing of browsing data.
  • The privacy statement explicitly says HP does not scan or collect the content of your printed files.
  • Deletion requests are honored (subject to the backup caveat above), HP says it won't discriminate against you for exercising privacy rights, and the arbitration clause at least preserves a small-claims court escape hatch with 60 days' written notice.

You give up your right to sue HP in court over anything to do with hp.com or the HP Store — every dispute goes to private arbitration run by the AAA, and you can't join a class action or private-attorney-general case either.

The fine print

6 clauses and findings from the draft archive, dated 1 October 2026. The plain English comes first; the small print is the company's own words. None of these has been checked yet.

  1. You give up your right to sue HP in court over anything to do with hp.com or the HP Store — every dispute goes to private arbitration run by the AAA, and you can't join a class action or private-attorney-general case either. There is no way to opt out of arbitration; the only alternative is small-claims court, and only if you give HP written notice within 60 days of your purchase. The arbitrator even gets to decide whether the arbitration clause itself is valid.

ANY CLAIM, DISPUTE, OR CONTROVERSY (WHETHER IN CONTRACT, TORT, OR OTHERWISE, WHETHER PRE-EXISTING, PRESENT, OR FUTURE, AND INCLUDING STATUTORY, CONSUMER PROTECTION, COMMON LAW, INTENTIONAL TORT, INJUNCTIVE AND EQUITABLE CLAIMS) BETWEEN YOU AND US ARISING FROM OR RELATING IN ANY WAY TO THE HP WEBSITE OR YOUR PURCHASE OF PRODUCTS OR SERVICES THROUGH THE HP STORE, WILL BE RESOLVED EXCLUSIVELY AND FINALLY BY BINDING ARBITRATION. ... NEITHER YOU NOR HP WILL BE ENTITLED TO JOIN OR CONSOLIDATE CLAIMS BY OR AGAINST OTHER CUSTOMERS IN COURT OR ARBITRATION OR OTHERWISE PARTICIPATE IN ANY CLAIM AS A CLASS REPRESENTATIVE, CLASS MEMBER OR IN A PRIVATE ATTORNEY GENERAL CAPACITY.

  2. Your HP printer phones home with how much you print, what app you printed from, and — pointedly — whether you're using third-party ink cartridges (HP specifically calls out detecting non-HP chips). And some HP services simply refuse to work unless you agree to the telemetry collection.

We collect printer usage data such as pages printed, print mode, media used, ink or toner cartridge type (in particular, whether nonoriginal cartridges, or cartridges with a non-HP chip or electronic circuitry are used), file type printed (.pdf, .jpg, etc.), application used for printing (Word, Excel, Adobe Photoshop, etc.), file size, time stamp, and usage and status of other printer supplies. ... Without the collection of telemetry (such as Printer Usage Data) and personal data we cannot provide certain services of functionality we have agreed to provide to the customer.

  3. HP hands your identifiers (name, address, email, device ID) to ad networks for targeted ads, pools your data in industry data-sharing cooperatives, and buys your name, address, and interests from data brokers. HP says it doesn't 'sell' data as traditionally understood — but admits that in some jurisdictions this sharing counts as selling under the law.

We may also transfer information about you to advertising partners (including the ad networks, adserving companies, and other service providers we may use) so that they may recognize your devices and deliver interestbased content and advertisements to you. The information may include your name, postal address, email, device ID, or other identifier in encrypted form. ... These providers ... may combine information about you with information from other companies in data sharing cooperatives in which we participate. ... Data brokers, social media networks and advertising networks — Commercially available data such as name, address, email address, preferences, interests, and certain demographic data.

  4. Instant Ink renews itself automatically, and the yearly plan locks you in for 12 months with no refund after the first 30 days. The sneakiest part: when you cancel, the ink cartridges sitting inside your printer are remotely switched off — you keep the plastic, but it won't print until you buy new cartridges.

Yearly plans automatically renew yearly or when all of your yearly plan pages are used, whichever comes first, unless auto-renewal is canceled. ... HP Instant Ink subscription cartridges only work while your printer is enrolled in the HP Instant Ink service. After your final billing cycle, you'll need to purchase a HP original cartridges ... to continue printing. ... cannot cancel yearly plan and get refund after the 30-day cancellation period.

  5. HP can rewrite the rules of its store — and change prices, promotions, and product terms — whenever it wants, in its sole discretion, without telling you first.

These Terms are subject to change by HP Inc. ... without prior written notice at any time, in our sole discretion. ... Prices, promotions, deals, specifications, product availability and terms of offers may change without notice.

  6. HP keeps your data for as long as it decides it has a 'legitimate business purpose' — explicitly including its own data-driven business decisions — with no fixed deletion schedule. And personal data sitting in long-term backups can never be deleted at all.

HP retains data as required or permitted by law and while the data continues to have a legitimate business purpose. ... We keep your personal data for as long as necessary to provide you with HP Services, for legitimate and essential business purposes (such as making datadriven business decisions), complying with our legal obligations, and resolving disputes. ... Because of the complexity of deleting data from inactive longterm backups, we can't delete personal data that is inactive.

    HP US Privacy Statement

How these were found

HP US Privacy Statement dated December 2024 (PDF hosted on hp.com, 'Date Posted: December 2024'; a newer April 2026 global PDF exists but the US December 2024 version is the operative US statement I read). HP Store Terms and Conditions read from the live hp.com page on 2026-10-01 (no version date shown on the page). The Instant Ink terms page (instantink.hpconnected.com) timed out on direct fetch, so the Instant Ink findings are verbatim snippets from HP's official domains (instantink.hpconnected.com and hp.com) returned by search rather than from a full page read — a live-browser read of the current terms is recommended before publishing. One guessed terms URL failed and was not retried per policy.
