Where MetLife does well

  • Arbitration 0 of 20. Nothing found.
  • MetLife states plainly: 'We do not sell or share your personal information, including your sensitive personal information to non-service provider third parties.'
  • No forced arbitration clause was found in any public-facing terms reviewed — insurance disputes keep state-insurance-department and (for ERISA group plans) independent external review routes.
  • MetLife publishes real CCPA compliance statistics, including the uncomfortable deletion-request denial numbers, rather than hiding them.
  • The MetLife Investment Management privacy notice goes further than peers: it does not share for marketing purposes at all ('For our marketing purposes – No').

MetLife can rewrite its website terms whenever it wants without asking you first — your only job is to keep re-reading the page to find out.

The fine print

6 clauses and findings from the draft archive, dated 1 October 2026. The plain English comes first; the small print is the company's own words. None of these has been checked yet.

  1. MetLife can rewrite its website terms whenever it wants without asking you first — your only job is to keep re-reading the page to find out.

You should review these terms and conditions regularly as they may change at any time at our sole discretion.

    Legal Notices (Terms and Conditions)

  2. Changes to the privacy policy take effect the moment they are posted online — no email, no notice, no click to agree. Keep checking or you are bound by whatever is there.

Any changes to this Privacy Policy will become effective when posted unless indicated otherwise.

    U.S. Consumer Privacy Policy

  3. Your most sensitive data — SSN, health info, biometrics, sexual orientation — is disclosed to roughly ten categories of third parties, including a vague catch-all of 'other companies' connected to your policy and your employer or plan sponsor.

Social Security number, driver's license... health information; sex life or sexual orientation; status as transgender or nonbinary [disclosed to] ... Other Companies associated your policy, transaction, or account; Plan Sponsor / Group Policyholder / Policyholder's Administrator; MetLife's Reinsurance Partner(s); ... Parties where MetLife has obtained your consent or authorization.

    U.S. Consumer Privacy Policy

  4. To stop MetLife sharing your data with affiliates and financial partners for marketing, you must print a paper form and mail it in. No online opt-out. And many customers never even get the opt-out notice, because 'many of our customers will not receive opt out notices because we do not have plans to share their information in this fashion.'

To opt out of marketing programs under which information about customers may be shared with other MetLife affiliated companies and/or unaffiliated financial services companies to let them offer their products to you, simply print the form, complete the information and mail the completed form to the address indicated on the form.

    MetLife Privacy Center

  5. MetLife keeps your personal data as long as any relationship with them is active plus whatever their internal retention schedule says — and when 16 Californians asked for deletion last year, 11 were refused, with only 1 granted fully.

MetLife, consequently, will retain personal information only for as long as is necessary for the purpose set out in our policies, for as long as an account or relationship with MetLife is active... Of 16 California deletion requests, we complied with one (1) in full, three (3) in part, and denied eleven (11) due to applicable exceptions on deletion.

    U.S. Consumer Privacy Policy

  6. Pet insurance policies auto-continue (billed to you directly) with zero action from you — including when you change jobs. The 30-day full-refund free-look only covers the first policy year, not renewals: 'This provision only applies to the initial policy... it does not apply to renewal policies.'

Your Pet Insurance policy will automatically remain in effect after you leave your employer and no action will be necessary on your part to continue your policy.

How these were found

Documents read directly: MetLife Legal Notices / Terms and Conditions (https://metlife.com/about-us/terms-and-conditions) and MetLife Privacy Center (https://www.metlife.com/about-us/privacy-policy/, live, footer © 2026) via browser_open on Oct 1, 2026. The U.S. Consumer Privacy Policy was read at the MetLife-hosted UAT URL https://uat.www.metlife.com/about-us/privacy-policy/us-consumer/ — identical document to the one the live Privacy Center links as the 'U.S. Consumer Privacy Policy' (same NLR[0226] footer and content), so quotes trace to MetLife's own domain. Pet-insurance auto-renewal and free-look quotes come from official-domain search-result snippets: Pet FAQs PDF (https://www.metlife.com/content/dam/metlifecom/us/homepage/ProServicePacific/Pet_FAQs.pdf) and the Ohio pet policy disclosure (http://metlife.com/content/dam/metlifecom/us/metlifepetinsurance/images/Website-Disclosure.pdf) — these pages were not opened in full, so quoted text is snippet-level verbatim. Additional noted clause not in the top six: the Legal Notices blanket liability waiver — 'UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHALL WE BE LIABLE FOR ANY DIRECT OR INDIRECT, SPECIAL, INCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES THAT MAY ARISE FROM YOUR USE OF, OR INABILITY TO USE, THIS WEB SITE.' No arbitration clause was located in the public documents reviewed; insurance policies themselves are governed by state insurance law and were not individually examined.

These notes come from the original draft and are not independent verification.
