Where Ameriprise Financial does well
- Renewals 4 of 20. Few problems found.
- Ameriprise does NOT share personal information with nonaffiliates so they can market to you — 'We don't share' — better than many financial peers.
- Prospect data is protected: 'If you provide your personal information to Ameriprise as a prospect, we will not share your information with our affiliates for marketing purposes.'
- State-law carve-outs are honored automatically: Vermont accounts are auto-treated as opted out of creditworthiness sharing and affiliate marketing, and CA/ND/VT accounts are excluded from joint marketing.
- RiverSource LTC policyholders' Protected Health Information is not used for marketing without authorization.
- Amendments to the client agreement require at least 30 days' written notice before taking effect (nonmaterial disclosure tweaks excepted).
- Current agreement versions and disclosures are posted at ameriprise.com/disclosures and available through any advisor, so the terms are at least publicly inspectable.
To open a brokerage account you must give up your right to sue Ameriprise in court or join a class action — every dispute goes to FINRA arbitration, a forum the company picks.
The fine print
6 clauses and findings from the draft archive, dated 1 October 2026. The plain English comes first; the small print is the company's own words. None of these has been checked yet.

To open a brokerage account you must give up your right to sue Ameriprise in court or join a class action — every dispute goes to FINRA arbitration, a forum the company picks.
By accepting the terms of this Agreement, you agree in advance, in accordance with this arbitration clause and the Federal Arbitration Act, to arbitrate any disputes, controversies or claims that may arise with Ameriprise Financial, AEIS, or any affiliate... or with any officer, director, employee, independent contractor, agent or franchisee of any of the foregoing... (A) All parties to this Agreement are giving up the right to sue each other in court, including the right to a trial by jury... No person shall bring a putative or certified class action to arbitration, nor seek to enforce any predispute arbitration agreement against any person who has initiated in court a putative class action.

Ameriprise can rewrite the contract at will (adding new terms, deleting old ones) — your continued use of the account counts as agreeing, and notice can be a mere website posting.
You agree that we shall have the right to amend this Agreement and any other document relating to your accounts with us, by modifying or rescinding any existing provisions or by adding any new provision... We may modify or change the terms and conditions of this Agreement... by providing a written notice of the material modification or change... or, if you have agreed to use the electronic services provided by us, by posting such modifications or changes online... The use of your account after the effective date of the proposed modification or change shall constitute your acknowledgement and agreement to be bound thereby.

Ameriprise collects biometric data from clients, explicitly including voice analysis — a notably invasive data category tucked into the standard privacy notice.
This information can include: • Social Security number and income • Assets and transaction history • Credit history and investment experience • Biometrics, including voice analysis

Your transaction data can be used for marketing to you by Ameriprise and handed to its joint-marketing partners (lenders, banks, credit unions) — and you cannot opt out of any of it; the only opt-outs are for affiliate creditworthiness sharing and affiliate marketing.
For our marketing purposes – to offer our products and services to you: [share] Yes / [can you limit] No. For joint marketing with other financial companies: Yes / No. For our affiliates' everyday business purposes – information about your transactions and experiences: Yes / No. Our joint marketing partners include federal and state regulated mortgage lenders, banks and credit unions.

Even after you close your accounts and leave, Ameriprise keeps sharing your personal information exactly as if you were still a customer.
If you are a new customer, we can begin sharing your information 30 days from the date we sent this notice. When you are no longer our customer, we continue to share information about you as described in this notice.

Ameriprise caps its total liability to whatever you originally paid for the service and bars all consequential damages — so if their mistake costs you far more than the fee, you cannot recover the difference under the contract terms.
YOU AGREE THAT IN NO EVENT WILL THE INTRODUCING BROKER, THE CLEARING BROKER... BE LIABLE TO YOU OR ANYONE ELSE FOR ANY CONSEQUENTIAL, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL OR INDIRECT DAMAGES (INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO LOST PROFITS, TRADING LOSSES...)... AND THAT THE LIABILITY... WILL NOT EXCEED THE AMOUNT YOU ORIGINALLY PAID FOR THE SERVICE.

How these were found
Documents actually read on Oct 1, 2026: (a) Ameriprise Brokerage Client Agreement, Form 402468 A H (09/26), 13 pages, fetched from afi-www.ameriprise.com as PDF (full text read); (b) FACTS Privacy Notice 200209-1 AC (7/26), ©2026 Ameriprise Financial, Inc., fetched from www.ameriprise.com/content/files/AMP_PRIVACY-NOTICE.PDF (full text read); (c) Website Terms of Use at ameriprise.com/legal/website-rules (full text read); (d) social-media page summary via search snippet for the user-generated-content license. No mirrors needed — all fetched directly from the official domain. Limitations: (1) the predispute arbitration language is the FINRA-prescribed disclosure format (FINRA Rule 2268) standard across broker-dealers, so it reflects industry/regulatory norms rather than Ameriprise-specific sneakiness; (2) public surface limitation — advisory, managed-account, and product-specific agreements that clients sign behind ameriprise.com/disclosures were not exhaustively reviewed; (3) the older 2016 FACTS notice (AMP_200209.PDF) was superseded by the 2026 AC version; (4) auto-renew traps scored low because a wealth-management relationship has little that maps onto subscription-style auto-renew; (5) search snippets (not full page reads) used only for the social-media UGC terms.
