Where Occidental Petroleum does well
- Arbitration 0 of 20. Nothing found.
- Renewals 0 of 20. Nothing found.
- No forced arbitration or class-action waiver anywhere in the public terms — disputes go to regular courts (Texas courts, per the venue clause), which is unusually restrained for a Fortune 500 company.
- Honors the Global Privacy Control (GPC) browser signal as a valid opt-out of data 'sales'/'sharing' and targeted advertising, and offers a 'Your Privacy Choices' cookie tool.
- A2P SMS program carve-out is explicit: 'Oxy does not sell or share' the contact info used for alerts and does not use it for marketing.
- Privacy Statement lists concrete data-rights request channels (Privacy@oxy.com, toll-free 800-699-7702, web form) with acknowledgment within 10 business days and a response within 45 days, plus a right to appeal denials and a no-discrimination promise.
- The site is not directed at children under 18 and it does not knowingly collect their data.
Oxy admits that data collected via third-party cookies and trackers on its sites is shared with outside parties for analytics and behavioral advertising — which it treats as a 'sale' or 'sharing' of personal information under U.S. state privacy laws.
The fine print
6 clauses and findings from the draft archive, dated 1 October 2026. The plain English comes first; the small print is the company's own words. None of these has been checked yet.

You can opt out, but only if you use the cookie tool or a Global Privacy Control signal.

Oxy can change its site terms whenever it wants with no notice to you. Just visiting the site after a change counts as you agreeing to the new terms — the burden is entirely on you to keep re-reading them.
The Terms are subject to change without notice by Occidental at any time. Please check for changes regularly. Your use of the Site after such changes constitutes your agreement to such changes.
-
Privacy-policy changes are posted quietly with a date stamp, and Oxy only 'may' notify you by some method it deems appropriate — you're expected to keep checking the page yourself.
Oxy may update this Privacy Statement from time to time and will post the updated Privacy Statement on our sites with a 'Last Updated' date at the bottom of this page. We may choose to otherwise notify you in a manner appropriate to the changes; please check our sites regularly.
-
Anything you send Oxy through its website — a business idea, a technology proposal — is treated as non-confidential and non-proprietary. You give up any claim that it was your private idea.
Occidental does not accept or consider unsolicited ideas, including ideas for new technologies or processes, through the Site... Do not transmit any material through the Site that you consider confidential or proprietary. Any material that you transmit through the Site will be considered not to be confidential or proprietary.
-
There are no fixed deletion deadlines — your data is kept 'no longer than necessary' under criteria Oxy decides itself, including keeping it if Oxy thinks it may be useful for disputes or lawsuits.
We retain personal data for no longer than necessary for the purposes described in this Privacy Statement, unless a longer retention period is required by applicable law... Whether retention is advisable in light of our legal position (such as in regard to the enforcement of our agreements; the resolution of disputes; and applicable statutes of limitations, litigation or regulatory investigation).

If you have any dispute over the website, you're forced to bring it in Texas courts (Harris County) no matter where you live — and a separate clause says your only remedy if you dislike the terms is to stop using the site.
You expressly agree that exclusive jurisdiction for any claim, dispute or cause of action relating in any way to your use of the Site, resides in the courts of the State of Texas, with venue residing solely in the United States District Court for the Southern District of the State of Texas or a similar Texas state court within Harris County, Texas.
How these were found
Website Terms of Use page bears no 'Last Updated' date (fetched 2026-10-01); Privacy Statement reads 'Last Updated: October 7, 2025'. All documents were read directly from the official oxy.com domain via text fetch — no mirrors were needed and nothing was login-gated. Oxy is an upstream oil company (mostly B2B/industrial); its public site has no consumer accounts, subscriptions, or storefront, so auto-renew/cancellation terms and data-sale practices are inherently minimal — score kept modest per rubric. Only the public-facing documents were reviewed: Website Terms of Use, A2P SMS Terms of Use, and the Privacy Statement. The third terms document (HSE Coach Terms of Use, an internal field-safety app) was not assessed. The Website Terms also contain an unusually strict anti-automation/AI-training clause ('strictly prohibited from using any text... to train, fine-tune, evaluate, validate, or develop any artificial intelligence, machine learning, large language model (LLM), or algorithmic system') which is a restriction on researchers/AI rather than a consumer-sneakiness issue and was not scored as a finding.
