Where Northern Trust does well

  • Renewals 0 of 20. Nothing found.
  • Northern Trust states it does not sell client information: the California Privacy Notice says "Northern Trust does not sell client information to other companies," and the CCPA notice adds it "does not sell and has not sold your Personal Information to nonaffiliated third parties in the preceding 12 months"; it also does not share personal information with nonaffiliates for marketing.
  • Customers CAN opt out of affiliate marketing and marketing-purpose use by calling 877-265-3729 or visiting a branch, and the CCPA notice pledges no discrimination for exercising privacy rights.
  • Pro-consumer fee move: the August 1, 2025 terms change eliminated returned-overdraft fees, extended overdraft fees, the $25 account-closing fee, check-copy fees and research fees, and cut the paid-overdraft fee from $30 to $25.
  • The arbitration clause preserves a small-claims-court escape hatch and offers JAMS/AAA as neutral forums.

Open a Northern Trust deposit account and you lose your right to sue in court, to a jury, to join a class action, and even to get punitive damages — any dispute goes to a private arbitrator chosen under JAMS/AAA rules, and the clause outlives your account.

The fine print

6 clauses and findings from the draft archive, dated 1 October 2026. The plain English comes first; the small print is the company's own words. None of these has been checked yet.

  1. Open a Northern Trust deposit account and you lose your right to sue in court, to a jury, to join a class action, and even to get punitive damages — any dispute goes to a private arbitrator chosen under JAMS/AAA rules, and the clause outlives your account.

"You and we agree that all claims and disputes will be resolved by binding arbitration when either you or we request it, and not through litigation in any court... You and we each agree and understand that there is no right to trial by jury with respect to any Claim and the arbitrator will have no authority to award punitive damages or other damages not measured by the prevailing party's actual damages... You and we are also waiving any right to participate in a class action, private attorney general action or other representative or consolidated proceeding, whether in court or arbitration... This arbitration provision shall survive the termination, amendment or expiration of this agreement."

  2. The bank can rewrite any part of the deal on its own; simply keeping the account open past the change's effective date counts as agreeing to it, and in suspected-fraud cases they can change or close things first and tell you later.

"We may change any term of this agreement... For other changes, we will give you reasonable notice in writing or by any other method permitted by applicable law... If we have notified you of a change in any term of your account and you continue to have your account after the effective date of the change, you have agreed to the new term(s)... in some cases such as when we cannot verify your identity or we suspect fraud, it might be reasonable for us to give you notice after the change or account closure becomes effective."

  3. Fees are pulled straight from your balance with no warning, and if you owe the bank anything — fees, overdrafts, loans — they can seize money from your account to cover it without telling you first.

"You authorize us to deduct these charges, without notice to you, directly from the account balance as accrued." ... "We may set off funds in your account for payment of the Obligations without prior notice and regardless of the source of funds in the account."

  4. They can use your Social Security number, income, balances, transaction and loan history for marketing and statistical analysis — and you have no right to stop it. Joint marketing with the Northern Funds is equally non-limitable, and the sharing continues even after you close your account.

"For our marketing purposes – to offer our products and services to you, including carrying out statistical analysis and marketing research: [Does Northern Trust share? YES] [Can you limit this sharing? NO]... For joint marketing with other financial companies: YES / NO... When you are no longer our customer, we continue to share your information as described in this notice."

  5. The 'conservative wealth bank' website runs ad-tech from Facebook, Google/DoubleClick, Bing, LinkedIn and YouTube to retarget you with ads on other sites — and merely visiting the site counts as agreeing to it.

"Advertising cookies — These cookies are used to deliver online advertisements on other websites that are more relevant to you and your interests... The hosts include: Bing, Facebook (applies to northerntrustcareers.com), Google/DoubleClick, LinkedIn, YouTube" ... "By using our websites and/or providing us with your consent (where required by applicable laws), you agree to us placing certain types of cookies described in this notice on your device."

  6. Your bank-account data is being moved into public-cloud infrastructure with a promise of 'expanding over time,' and you pre-consent to having every phone call with them recorded.

"We use the capabilities of the public cloud for many of our products and services and will be expanding over time as we build new applications and improve the performance of existing applications." ... "Subject to applicable law, we may monitor or record phone calls... You consent in advance to any such recording."

How these were found

Main northerntrust.com HTML pages (terms hub, US privacy page, cookie policy) blocked automated fetching (empty HTTP 500 responses / timeouts), so those were read only via search-result snippets from the official domain (cookie notice page last crawled ~14 days before research). Two official documents were read in full via browser_open: the Deposit Account Terms & Conditions (doc ID NT-AIB 8/1/2025, effective August 1, 2025) and the US Privacy Notice FACTS notice (revised October 2022), the latter fetched from the northerntrust.au-global.com regional domain mirror of the identical official PDF. The general website Terms of Use for northerntrust.com itself could not be retrieved; no verbatim mirrors on OpenTermsArchive/PrivacyTracker/Difficode were found. Northern Trust is a wealth-management bank, not a consumer subscription product: there is genuinely no auto-renew/cancel-trap surface, so that category is scored 0. Scores are editorial judgment; all clause text was read from the documents cited.
