out of 100. Number 133 of 512, counting from the worst.

  • Arbitration 16 of 20, bad
  • Renewals 3 of 20, good
  • Data sharing 11 of 20
  • Price & terms 13 of 15, bad
  • Data retention 7 of 15
  • Other findings 9 of 10, bad

Where KeyCorp does well

  • Renewals 3 of 20. Few problems found.
  • The arbitration provision includes a real 60-day opt-out: you can reject it entirely by mailing a signed, written notice within 60 days of opening the account (PO Box 93752, Cleveland, OH) — many large banks offer no opt-out at all.
  • For personal accounts, KeyBank pays all AAA arbitration-administrator fees after you cover just the equivalent of a court filing fee, and it will not pursue its own attorney/expert fees from you unless your claim is found frivolous under a FRCP Rule 11 standard — a meaningful consumer protection.
  • Small-claims court remains an option for eligible claims instead of arbitration.
  • On privacy, Key states plainly 'We do not sell your Personal Information' and does not share with nonaffiliates for their marketing — better than peers that monetize customer data.
  • California and Vermont residents automatically get internal-sharing and family-marketing opt-outs applied by default.
  • Sensitive personal information (SSN, account numbers) is restricted to identity verification, fraud prevention, and transaction processing, not used for marketing.

By opening a KeyBank account you give up your right to sue in court, to a jury trial, and to join or start a class action — every dispute must go to private arbitration, and this applies even to claims about misleading ads or your account application.

The fine print

6 clauses and findings from the draft archive, dated 1 October 2026. The plain English comes first; the small print is the company's own words. None of these has been checked yet.

  1. By opening a KeyBank account you give up your right to sue in court, to a jury trial, and to join or start a class action — every dispute must go to private arbitration, and this applies even to claims about misleading ads or your account application. The agreement is unusually candid that "THE FEES CHARGED BY THE ARBITRATION ADMINISTRATOR MAY BE GREATER THAN THE FEES CHARGED BY A COURT." Worse: before filing any claim you must first send a formal 'Notice of Pre-Arbitration Dispute' to a specific KeyBank email/address and wait 60 days, and any claim not tied to that prior notice must be dismissed — a procedural tripwire that can kill a legitimate dispute on a technicality.

"All disputes between you and us relating to any Claim or Claims (as defined below) shall be determined by arbitration as set forth in this Arbitration Provision and this Arbitration Provision provides the sole recourse, remedy, and forum with respect to any Claim or Claims." Also: "NEITHER YOU NOR WE WILL HAVE THE RIGHT TO LITIGATE ANY CLAIM IN COURT OR HAVE A JURY TRIAL ON ANY CLAIM, OR TO ENGAGE IN PRE-ARBITRATION DISCOVERY... FURTHER, NEITHER YOU NOR WE WILL HAVE THE RIGHT TO PARTICIPATE AS A REPRESENTATIVE OR MEMBER OF ANY CLASS OF CLAIMANTS PERTAINING TO ANY CLAIM SUBJECT TO ARBITRATION OR RESOLUTION IN SMALL CLAIMS COURT." Related gatekeeping clause: "Before initiating an arbitration or small claims court action, you must notify us at Judgment_Processing@KeyBank.com or KeyBank, N.A., Account Restraint & Seizures, 4900 Tiedeman Rd., Mailcode: OH-01-49-3001, Brooklyn, OH 44144 before filing any formal proceeding... A court, arbitration administrator, or arbitrator must dismiss a Claim(s) that is not related to a notice provided at least 60 days prior to the Claim(s) being filed."

  2. Opening an account means agreeing — as a condition of keeping the account — to robocalls and automated texts from KeyBank, its affiliates, and even third-party debt collectors, to any mobile number including ones you never gave them (they can get them via skip-tracing). The bank says this consent 'may not be able to be revoked.'

"By entering this agreement, you are providing express consent to Laurel Road, a brand of KeyBank and its service providers, affiliates, agents, successors, assigns, and third party debt collectors to contact you regarding your accounts on any of your mobile phone numbers, whether you provide those numbers to Laurel Road (now or in the future), a third party provides those numbers, they are obtained via skip tracing, or are obtained from any other source. This consent applies to all calls and text messages including those made using an automatic telephone dialing system, autodialer, and/or an automated or prerecorded voice... This consent to contact is a requirement for maintaining any account at Laurel Road and may not be able to be revoked."

  3. KeyBank can raid any of your accounts at any time — including a joint account — to pay a debt owed by only one account holder, without notifying you first and regardless of whether the debt is even due. Your partner's savings can be seized for your debt.

"We reserve the right to withdraw at any time some or all of the funds that may now or later be on deposit in any or all of your accounts and apply them to the payment of any debts... We have this right even if the account(s) we withdraw money from is a joint account and the debt we apply it to is owed by only one of you... You agree that our right of setoff is not conditioned on, or limited by, the complete mutuality of the parties obligated on the debt and owners on your account, the maturity of the debt, the giving of notice to you, or the availability of any collateral securing the debt."

Deposit Account Agreement and Funds Availability Policy, Section 19 (Our Right of Setoff)

  4. KeyBank can rewrite your account terms whenever it wants, giving only whatever notice it personally deems 'appropriate.' The website terms are even looser: they can change with zero notice and simply visiting key.com again counts as agreeing to the new terms.

"We reserve the right to change or add to the terms and conditions of this Agreement or change the terms of your account at any time. We will give you such notice of the change as we determine is appropriate, such as by statement message or enclosure, letter, or as posted in the branch, and as required under applicable law." Separately, the website User Agreement may be changed "at any time without notice," with continued site use counting as acceptance.

  5. KeyBank shares your data with affiliates and for joint marketing with other financial companies — and for three of the seven sharing categories you are given no way to stop it. Even after you close your account, the bank can keep sharing your information under these same terms.

Privacy Notice sharing table (revised 11-5-2025): 'For our marketing purposes — to offer our products and services to you: YES / cannot limit. For joint marketing with other financial companies: YES / cannot limit. For our affiliates' everyday business purposes — information about your transactions and experiences: YES / cannot limit. For our affiliates' everyday purposes — information about your credit worthiness: YES / can limit. To our affiliates to market to you: YES / can limit.' Also: 'When you are no longer our customer, we can continue to share your information as described in this notice.'

  6. If you don't manually sign a paper copy of an electronic document within 10 days of being asked, KeyBank grants itself the power to sign your name on it for you — an extraordinary power of attorney tucked into a deposit account agreement.

"You irrevocably authorize and appoint us as your lawful attorney-in-fact with full power and authority to sign, in your name and on your behalf, any such original of any Electronic Record or Signed Document, if you fail or are unable, for any reason, to sign such original no later than ten days after our request to you to do so."

How these were found

Documents relied on, all from official KeyBank/KeyCorp domains: (1) Deposit Account Agreement and Funds Availability Policy, effective March 12, 2025 (includes Notice of Change effective 5/10/25 extending check-hold periods), document ID 032025COMP-2137, read in full at https://doctors.key.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Deposit-Account-Agreement-_Funds-Availability-Policy_032025COMP-2137.pdf (KeyBank-hosted PDF; URL resolves via a KeyBank SharePoint path but is KeyBank's own disclosure, branded Laurel Road/KeyBank N.A.). (2) User Agreement (For Access to World Wide Website), revised February 19, 2026, read in full at https://www.key.com/about/misc/user-agreement.html. (3) KeyCorp Online Privacy Statement, last updated November 5, 2025, read in full via KeyBank's eDAS disclosure system at https://online1.keybank.com/dcm/GetEdasDisclosure?action=special&pa=PRIV&pg=PVY&sp=OLPS&bn=101&pd=101&output=html_complete&name=KOP-Stmt. (4) KeyCorp Privacy Notice for Consumers (GLBA notice), revised 11-5-2025, read in full via the eDAS system at https://online1.keybank.com/dcm/GetEdasDisclosure?action=product&pa=PRIV&pg=PVY&sp=PRVX&bn=101&pd=101&output=html_complete. Limitations: the key.com page version of the KeyCorp Privacy Notice (key.com/about/misc/privacy-policy-keycorp.html) did not render in automated fetch, so the eDAS disclosure-system copy was used instead (same official document family). The standalone Online Banking Service Agreement page (key.com/personal/online-banking/service-agreement.html) was identified but not read in full; Online Banking terms are incorporated by reference into the agreements above. No third-party mirrors were used. The Deposit Account Agreement's wireless/robocall consent language is presented under the Laurel Road brand (a KeyBank N.A. brand) and may differ from the branch-market version.
